The pochard is one of our Top 20 birds. It is a medium-sized diving duck. In winter and spring, the drake is very distinctive, with a bright chestnut head, black breast and tail and pale grey body. Females are more easily confused with other species; they are brown with a greyish body and pale cheeks. Most of the birds in Britain come from northern and eastern Europe for the winter, with just a few pairs staying to nest.
It has bred at Siddick Pond in the past but is now most often seen during the autumn and winter months.
